Why We Ride
It’s proven that riding a bicycle can help you live longer, boost the economy, and promote a healthy, active and sustainable lifestyle. Team SixOneFour is working to build an ideal environment for cyclists by making bicycling a prominent, safe and convenient form of transportation and recreation.
Team SixOneFour and hundreds of area cyclists will bring high-speed excitement and family friendly activities to the Franklinton, OH area with the Tour of Franklinton Criterium Cycling Race and Bike Rally.
About Criterium Racing
Criteriums, or Crits are like high speed 30-60 minute chess matches on bicycles with sharp turns, bumping elbows and a rush of carbon wind. We’re talking average speeds in the low 20s with maximum speeds reaching 35-40 mph! Six turns; one 135 degree turn to the start/finish area; a few choppy streets; and flat, flat, flat – that’s the Tour of Franklinton. The first race starts at 9:45am with the last race wrapping up around 5pm. Please see the schedule for exact details.
Family Bike Rally
Last year’s highlight was the kid’s lap of the race course at 2:40pm. With a signed waiver, kids 10 and under can get their own race number and enjoy taking a lap around the course. Registration with parental signature and helmets are required.
Watching The Race
The best way to watch the race is walk the course backwards; you’ll get to see the racers coming at you and you’ll see how they tackle each area, especially the technical corners. The start/finish line is placed serendipitously near 400 Rich’s food truck mecca, Dinin’ Hall so fans can can get a bit to eat without missing any action. The recently opened Rehab Bar on Town Street will serve spectators as well.
Though Franklinton, OH is the last downtown neighborhood to be redeveloped, it is actually the birthplace of Columbus, settled 15 years before the city itself. Ohio has a long-standing relationship with the bicycle. The Wright Brothers famously got their start with the Wright Brothers Cycle Company in Dayton. Three time Tour de France winner Greg Lemond was a young junior racing around the hills of Bellefontaine, OH at the 1980 Olympic trials for the eventually-boycotted Moscow games. The most famous cycling son of Columbus is Andrew Hampsten, Tour de France stage winner and even more impressively, the only American winner of the Giro d’Italia, the second most famous, and arguably harder stage road race.
Gladden Community House is a settlement house located in the heart of Franklinton in Columbus, Ohio. As a United Way affiliated non-profit agency, they offer a broad range of neighborhood-based social services to individuals, families, and groups.
